MEET NIGEL…
Nigel Sampson is a respected Pilates educator, movement innovator, and the Creative & Educational Director for Stretch-eze®. Born in Adelaide, Australia, Nigel relocated to Los Angeles at 22, where his journey in movement began under an unlikely but formative mentor — Sam Calhoun, America's Most Muscular Man of 1956.
Working alongside Calhoun at Progressive Fitness, Nigel built a deep foundation in exercise science, preparing clients for their ACE and ACSM certification exams and later working as a Fitness Testing Specialist contracted by the U.S. Department of Justice. This early grounding in scientific rigor would shape everything that followed.
In the early 1990s, Pilates found him. He completed his classical certification through a course led by Jill Cassidy, a protégé of Romana Kryzanowska, who dedicated her life to preserving the ntegrity of Joseph Pilates' original method. The course brought together an extraordinary faculty — Ron Fletcher, Rael Isacowitz, Jillian Hessel, and Kathy Corey — giving Nigel a classical foundation shaped by some of the most influential voices of that generation.
By the late 1990s, he was applying this knowledge in a clinical setting, working in Pilates-based rehabilitation at Hollywood Physical Therapy — deepening his understanding of how the body heals when met with intelligence and presence. In 1999, he co-founded Whole Body Method, where over 25 years he taught more than 50,000 sessions and certified instructors worldwide.
Yet after 25 years, something kept surfacing — a sense of what traditional Pilates left unexplored. This led him on a deeper search, working directly with Mary Bowen and John Steel, two of Joseph Pilates' closest living connections, and Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle, whose approach to embodied movement opened new doors in his understanding. It was Mary Bowen who planted a seed that never left him: "The body is the best teacher — when we stop telling it what to do." He went further still — studying Spiraldynamik®, a Swiss system exploring the evolutionary patterns of spirals in human movement, with renowned Pilates educators Ton Voogt and Michael Fritzke, alongside the latest thinking in biotensegrity, fascial science, and somatic movement, including the work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. What emerged was a profound shift: movement not as a system to Impose on the body, but as an intelligence already within it.
This became the foundation of Pilates EnergetiXTM — his movement method that honors classical Pilates while integrating sensory awareness, natural movement patterns, and the body's own organizing wisdom. Today Nigel lives in the Eastern Mojave Desert of California offering private training, global workshops, and immersive retreats — and teaching Stretch-eze courses to movement professionals around the world. The Stretch-eze is a key sensory feedback tool for his training method.
Nigel’s credentials span Classical Pilates, Gyrotonic®, Kundalini Yoga, ACSM/NASM/ACE fitness certifications, Yamuna® Body Rolling, Neurokinetic Therapy®, Applied Kinesiology, Konnector® Method, and Spiraldynamik® — a depth of training that brings both precision and humanity to every course he teaches.
